The PaperSort™ system has the potential to redefine what this industry considers "Automation". MSS has combined commonly used screens, conveyors and other innovative mechanical techniques with the world’s first high-speed optical sensor for automatic identification and recovery of premium paper grades from mixed office paper or removal of contaminants/prohibitives from premium paper grades.

The PaperSort™ is currently being showcased at two commercial paper processing facility in the United States. The single line RP-1200 prototype system is operated on a continuous basis.

The PaperSort™ reduces the number of manual sorters required to meet mill specifications while generating a more consistent grade of recycled paper than is achievable with human visual inspection only.

Mixed office paper enters the PaperSort™ system much like a manual sorting line. An infeed conveyor from a pit takes the paper up to the system. The PaperSort™ first employs various mechanical techniques to reduce burden depth and provide a uniform, metered, and single layer feedstream of papers to the sensor module. High-speed conveyors transport large volumes of paper quickly. The sensor identifies the optical properties of paper to determine premium value. The sensor provides paper type, size, and position data to a central computer that operates a series of precision air nozzles to provide automatic removal of the selected paper grades. The PaperSort™ system can be provided with a second sensor array in series with the first one for removal of a second premium grade of paper, or as a second pass for improved product purity.
